NIVEDITA 150th Birth Anniversary Programs

Sister Nivedita was a disciple and God child of Swami Vivekananda, the eternal light that shines in the spiritual firmament of India; born as Margaret Elizabeth Noble in Northern Ireland on October 28, 1867. We are getting ready to celebrate the 150th anniversary of this divine birth. The occasion not only commemorates her brilliant life but also her devotion and dedication to her Guru and India.

In 1885, she met Swami Vivekananda, the flag-bearer of Sanatana Dharma (Eternal Path) in London. This was a turning point in her young life which was already dedicated to self-inquiry through selfless service. Young Margaret made a momentous decision to leave her friends and family and to accompany her teacher to India. She landed in India on Januay 28, 1898.

In Belur, young Margaret began her transformation to Sister Nivedita under the tutelage of Sri Ramakrishna Paramhamsa, Sri Sarada Devi, Swami Vivekananda and his other brother monks. In 1898 Swami Vivekananda formally initiated her into the monastic order and named her Nivedita.

At the time Sister Nivedita began her spiritual life in India, the country was under an oppressive British Raj. Indians who came into contact with Sister Nivedita, a white British subject herself were taken by her purity of character, strong willpower, uncompromising courage, unconditional respect for her Guru and selfless service to humanity. They fondly called her a white mountain of strength.

Sister Nivedita worked hard to promote Swami Vivekananda's ideas on women's education and reformation of Indian culture and values. Not only did she travel the length and breadth of India, but she also became actively involved in the Indian independence struggle.

She left her mortal body on October 13, 1911 at the age of 44 in the Himalayan town of Darjeeling in India. Sister Nivedita, an Irish woman served India, it's people and its values much more than many Indians have. This is a time for India and its people to remember, celebrate, thank and pay homage to this immortal being. Vivekananda DarsnikaSamajam and Vivekananda Kendra Vedic Vision Foundation are jointly organizing 'Samarpanam' to celebrate Sister Nivedita's 150th birth anniversary. The celebration will formally begin in 28th October 2016. Let us all work with single-minded devotion to recognize this divine life and to spread her teachings all over India.
